Hair Extensions

Everything you need to know about hair extensions

Hair Extensions is one of my strongest and favorite aspects in the hair industry. In my opinion this is a genius idea that transforms the entire look of a person by adding extra dimension, length, texture, and volume to the hair. And there is no need to do the full head in order to create a different look. Even a few strands of a different colour can create a beautiful change, and to be honest, it is much faster and healthier than colouring or bleaching the hair.

Very important to remember:

There are many hair extension retailers and salons that offer this service, however, not all of them carry 100% Real Human Hair, that is also Remi Hair. This is important, if you want the hair to last for a while, and not to melt while you apply hot tools on it. Moreover, real human remi hair is less likely to get tangled (when wet or dry).

What is REMI HAIR?

Remi hair (sometimes spelled Remy) means that the cuticle layer for the hair extension is still intact. The hair has been collected from donors (women with long hair) and is processed into extensions with all the cuticles facing in the same direction.

The most common types of hair extensions:

There are many types of Hair Extensions, and each of them is made for a different goal. Below I will explain my favorite four types of hair extensions and techniques:

1. Clip-in Hair Extensions

clip-in-hair-extensionsThis type of hair extensions can be removed & put on daily, and very easy to work with. For better hold, I always recommend to tease the part where the clip is going to sit on. When I offer this type to my clients, we pick the right colour together and then I measure the client’s scalp, since I am going to sow the clips on the hair weft, and it will be customized specifically to the client’s head. The clips are small enough and are invisible to others. A full head usually requires around 7-8 clips (See picture).

2. Tape-in Hair Extensions

tape extensionsThis is a great invention, since the tapes are flat and very light, and it feels like there is nothing in your hair. The tape-in extensions technique allows you to create volume and extra length with very little hair, and that is due to the special placement technique that I use when applying tape-in hair extensions.
Tape-In extensions come in wefts, each 1.5 inches wide. There are 10 of these wefts in every pack and each weft comes pre-bonded with a special adhesive designed for use with hair. A typical full head of Tape-In extensions is about 3 to 5 packs of hair. But just to add dimension and or extra colour, one pack is enough.

The stylist pulls off the protective strip on the Tape-In weft and presses the adhesive area firmly onto the hair near the scalp. Then another hair extension weft is placed underneath the first hair weft, sandwiching the client’s hair in between the two wefts. This technique keeps the hair and hair extension in place, sealed in the protective adhesive strips. The adhesive is strong and safe for use in hair. Once finished, the bonds lie completely flat against the head and are covered by the upper layers of hair, making the attachment points undetectable and smooth.

Tape-In hair extensions can last for about two to four months. Then, the client needs to come back in order to remove them with a special solution. The good thing is that you can reuse those extension one more time after removal.

3. Hot fusion Hair Extensions

LENOVO DIGITAL STILL CAMERAFusion hair extensions are one of the most popular methods of professional hair extension attachment, mostly because it’s the oldest and most traditional method of attaching hair extensions. Stylists and clients love Fusion because it’s trusted, natural, and long-lasting. You’ll also hear people call this the “hot fusion”.

Fusion hair extensions come in packs, with individual thin pieces of hair. A full head will usually require between 100-150 pieces of  fusion hair extensions.

The hair extension tip is a square-shaped keratin protein bond. This tip is solid until melted with the Hair Extension Tool, and then attached to the client’s hair close to the scalp.
Fusion hair extensions can last for about three to six months, and I highly recommend to come back then in order to remove them, otherwise they start to tangle up by the scalp.

This method is great, since it looks very natural, and adds a lot of body to the hair. Even though it is a lengthy procedure, it is definitely worth it.

4. Cold Fusion Hair Extensions

iLoc hair extensions This is another technique that I really adore, since it is probably one of the easiest and healthiest way to apply hair extensions.

Cold fusions, might be also called “single/double loop extensions”, is a technique where individual strands of hair are attached to the clients hair with a special silicone bead surrounded by a metal bead, which creates maximum hold and minimum damage.

Cold fusion hair extensions do not involve any hot tools, glue, or chemicals. only special beads, and a special clamp that helps attache the beads to your hair. And the removal is fast and easy as well.

The cold fusion hair extensions can last in your hair between 2-5 months, but I highly encourage you to come back every 8-10 weeks for a touch up (maintenance). This simply means, that I will check if any of the hair slid off too far from the scalp, and I will simply bring it closer to the scalp again. And the best part is that the hair is reusable, after removing it completely! Cold fusions also look very natural, and others will not be able to notice that you are wearing anything.
